Beyond CPL: Turn HubSpot revenue data into better LinkedIn campaigns

Your CRM already knows which LinkedIn leads became opportunities and customers. Sharing those outcomes back with LinkedIn can turn them from reporting data into signals for better attribution, campaign decisions, and optimization.

There is a new LinkedIn integration in town - or at least one that more B2B marketers should know about: the Revenue Attribution Report.

It connects LinkedIn with your CRM, such as HubSpot, and brings pipeline and revenue data into LinkedIn. The question we most often hear, however, is: “Why do I need to see my CRM leads in LinkedIn when I can already see the leads generated by LinkedIn in HubSpot?”

It is a fair question. From a reporting perspective alone, you may not need the same data in both places. HubSpot is - and should remain - the source of truth for your customer and commercial data.

But the integration is not primarily about duplicating your HubSpot reporting inside LinkedIn. It is about returning commercial outcomes to the platform making decisions about your campaigns.

That is where things get interesting.

At Helion B2B, our paid-social and HubSpot specialists work across the same commercial journey. Our view is simple: the goal should not be to generate the most leads. It should be to generate the most relevant leads.

That is why we recommend looking beyond CPL and connecting campaign activity with the CRM outcomes that reveal which leads create business value - and returning those learnings to the people and platforms making the next decision.

If LinkedIn only receives form submissions as feedback, it may continue finding more people who behave like form-fillers - not necessarily people who resemble your qualified opportunities. That is not just a reporting gap. It can become a performance gap.

Can’t I just identify my best campaigns in HubSpot?

Yes, you can. But seeing the outcome in your CRM and making it actionable inside LinkedIn are two different things.

Depending on your tracking and attribution setup, HubSpot can show which LinkedIn campaigns were associated with - or credited for - leads, opportunities and pipeline. You do not need a LinkedIn report simply to see that Campaign B was associated with more commercial value than Campaign A.

HubSpot and LinkedIn do, however, bring different information to the table:

  • HubSpot holds the contact, company, deal, and revenue history across channels.
  • LinkedIn holds its own campaign, audience, and ad-exposure data.
  • Connecting them brings commercial outcomes closer to the media activity that influenced them.

That gives marketers a more immediate LinkedIn-specific view of which campaigns and audiences are associated with pipeline and revenue. It can also reveal influence that a simple CRM source field or last-click model may miss - particularly in long B2B buying journeys.

More importantly, looking at pipeline data in HubSpot informs the marketer. Sending relevant lifecycle events back to LinkedIn can also inform the platform.

Without that feedback, LinkedIn may know that Campaign A generated 40 leads at a lower CPL than Campaign B. HubSpot may later show that Campaign B created more qualified opportunities. Unless those outcomes are returned to LinkedIn, the platform keeps receiving a much stronger signal from the form fill than from the result your business actually values.

So yes, you can find the answer in HubSpot. The integration puts that answer closer to your campaign decisions - and can let LinkedIn learn from it too.

Two routes for returning CRM signals to LinkedIn

Connecting HubSpot and LinkedIn can support both revenue reporting and campaign optimization. How you share the data determines what LinkedIn can do with it.

CRM Sync and the Revenue Attribution Report

CRM Sync connects HubSpot with LinkedIn Business Manager, allowing LinkedIn to associate selected CRM data with advertising activity.

It powers the Revenue Attribution Report and brings metrics such as pipeline amount, revenue won, win rate and return on ad spend into LinkedIn. It can also create conversions based on CRM leads and qualified leads, which can support optimization for eligible lead-generation campaigns.

This does not make LinkedIn the new source of truth. HubSpot should continue to hold the complete customer and commercial record, while LinkedIn provides a platform-specific view of how advertising is associated with those outcomes.

Lifecycle-stage conversion events

HubSpot can also send lifecycle-stage changes to LinkedIn through the Conversions API. These events might represent stages such as MQL, SQL, opportunity or customer, giving LinkedIn more meaningful signals than the initial form submission alone.

Both routes can make CRM outcomes actionable in Campaign Manager. The right setup depends on your data and objectives, and it should be configured deliberately: duplicate or inconsistent signals can distort reporting and optimization.

And nothing happens by magic - sadly, Campaign Manager still does not come with that switch. The signals must be accurate, timely and frequent enough to support useful learning.

What changes when LinkedIn gets the full story?

CPL tells you how cost-efficiently a campaign generates form submissions. Down-funnel data helps reveal whether those leads create business value.

Across our B2B paid-social and HubSpot work, we often see the lowest-CPL campaign look like the obvious candidate for more budget. Once CRM data brings lead quality and pipeline into the picture, the apparent winner can change.

Imagine two campaigns:

  • Campaign A generates 100 leads at €80 per lead, but only two become qualified opportunities.
  • Campaign B generates 50 leads at €120 per lead, but ten become qualified opportunities and three become customers.

At lead level, Campaign A wins - or at least it wins the beauty contest. At pipeline and revenue level, Campaign B clearly creates more value.

Bringing commercial outcomes into LinkedIn improves the conversation in four ways.

You can evaluate quality, not only volume. Campaigns can be compared using cost per qualified lead, pipeline, revenue and ROAS rather than CPL alone. An expensive lead may be a very efficient opportunity.

You can teach the algorithm what “good” looks like. If the strongest signal LinkedIn receives is a form submission, it learns who is likely to submit a form. Qualified-lead events give the platform more information about which people go on to become valuable leads. However, the algorithm needs a consistent flow of timely data to learn effectively. Because closed-won revenue often occurs too infrequently or too late, an MQL or SQL will usually be a more practical optimization signal.

You gain another view of attribution. B2B journeys rarely follow a neat line from ad click to sale. LinkedIn’s exposure data can show influence that may not appear in a last-click CRM field, especially across longer sales cycles and buying committees.

Revenue moves closer to day-to-day decisions. When specialists can see qualified outcomes alongside campaign activity, they can bring those insights into ongoing audience, creative and budget decisions - without waiting for a quarterly pipeline review, manually combining data from multiple systems or relying solely on surface-level efficiency.

This also gives marketing and sales a more useful common language. The discussion can move from “Did we generate enough leads?” to “Which campaigns and audiences created qualified pipeline?”

Useful? Yes. Perfect? No.

Better signals can support better decisions - but only when the data behind them is reliable.

Connecting HubSpot and LinkedIn will not create perfect attribution. No integration can capture every touchpoint, buying-committee interaction or offline conversation. The insights will also only be as reliable as the lifecycle stages, deal associations and revenue data recorded in your CRM.

The goal is therefore not to send every available CRM update back to LinkedIn. It is to identify a small number of meaningful and reliable signals that represent genuine commercial progress.

At Helion B2B, we recommend optimizing toward the deepest reliable signal - not simply the deepest signal available. Closed-won revenue may be closest to the final business outcome, but if it happens too rarely or too late, it provides little useful feedback for campaign optimization. For many B2B companies, a consistently defined MQL or SQL will be the more actionable signal.

The integration should be treated as one valuable part of a broader measurement approach, alongside CRM reporting, sales feedback and commercial analysis. And, as with any CRM integration, the relevant privacy and data-sharing requirements should be considered before implementation.

Your CRM stores the truth. The integration makes it actionable.

HubSpot can keep the commercial truth. LinkedIn simply needs enough of that truth to support better campaign decisions.

The reason to connect HubSpot revenue data with LinkedIn is not that your CRM is insufficient. It is that data creates more value when it can travel back to the system making media decisions.

The goal is not simply to prove that LinkedIn generated leads. It is to understand whether LinkedIn influenced pipeline and revenue - and use that knowledge to make the next media investment better.

Not sure whether LinkedIn is optimizing toward the leads your business actually values?

Start by reviewing which lifecycle stages are available in HubSpot, how consistently they are updated and whether those outcomes are being returned to Campaign Manager.

At Helion B2B, our paid-social and HubSpot specialists combine campaign, lead-quality, and pipeline insights to understand what drives commercial value, and use those learnings to improve overall lead-generation performance.
